Kailua home fire kills cat, injures 2 others while causing nearly $400,000 in damage
Honolulu Fire Department investigators reported that a Kailua house fire Friday afternoon killed a pet cat, critically injured two others and caused $380,000 in damages.
A mother and her adult son evacuated from the single-story duplex around noon after a fire started in a bedroom near the back of the residence on Maluniu Avenue.
There were no smoke alarms in the home, and the two occupants at the time were made aware of the fire by the smoke. The son had tried to extinguish the fire before evacuating.
HFD said three cats were found in the home during a search. One was “fatally injured” while the other two are in critical condition.
The fire department estimated $360,000 in damage to the building and $20,000 in damage to its contents. It is still investigating the cause of the fire.
