A celebration for the 175th anniversary of Washington Place was held on Thursday. The National Historic Landmark has housed royalty and dignitaries and is best known as the former home of Hawaii’s last reigning monarch Queen Lili'oukalani. Construction for the mansion began in 1842 by Captain John Dominic and his wife Mary. In 1848 it was named in honor of President George Washington and in 1921 became the official residence for the state's governor.
