Gov. Josh Green toured an area of devastation on Hawaii island on Aug. 16, following Hurricane Lala. FEMA has approved federal disaster assistance for Hawaii following Hurricane Lala in August and Hurricane Lowell in September, with funding available for emergency work and damaged public facilities.

The federal government has approved major disaster declarations for Hawaii following Hurricane Lala in August and Hurricane Lowell in September, making federal assistance available to help state, city and county governments recover from damage caused by the storms.

President Donald Trump approved the declarations, FEMA announced today.

For Lala, which affected Hawaii from Aug. 14 to 16, FEMA said public assistance funding is available to the state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations in the city and county of Honolulu, Hawaii County and Maui County.

The funding can help pay for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the hurricane. Federal assistance will be provided on a cost-sharing basis.

Hirokazu Toiya has been named the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations related to Lala. FEMA said additional areas could be designated later if damage assessments warrant it.

For Lowell, which affected Hawaii from Sept. 6 to 9, FEMA said public assistance funding is available in Kauai and Maui counties.

That funding also covers emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the hurricane and will be provided on a cost-sharing basis.

Alexandra M. Slous has been named the Federal Coordinating Officer for Lowell recovery operations.

FEMA said additional designations could be made later based on the results of damage assessments.

The announcements concern FEMA’s Public Assistance program for governments and eligible private nonprofits. Neither announcement includes individual assistance payments for residents or businesses.
