Maui brush fire in Waiehu area is 50% contained

Crews worked to control a fire in heavy brush on the mauka side of Kahekili Highway.
Firefighters are still working to contain the brush fire at Kahekili Highway, according to a Maui Fire Department report just before 8 tonight.
The fire, located on the mauka side the highway in the Waiehu area, burned seven acres and was 50% contained as of the report.
“Crews will continue working to contain this fire with dozers cutting a break around the perimeter,” the MFD report said.
The brush fire has not threatened any structures. MFD did not report any injuries, either.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The fire department reported winds to be 20 miles per hour.

A portion of Kahekili Highway in the Waiehu area is closed due to a brush fire, the Maui Police Department reported today.
The closure is between Makaala Drive and Waiehu Beach Road. MPD made the announcement on its Facebook page at around 3:30 p.m. and is asking the public to avoid the area.
