Hotel Street is closed in downtown Honolulu between Bishop and Bethel streets so City and County of Honolulu crews can trim a banyan tree that is leaning into the roadway.

The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation said its Division of Urban Forestry team is assisting a landowner to trim the top of the tree to “reduce the weight on the canopy and minimize the likelihood of a structural failure.”

Hotel St. is a significant thoroughfare for TheBus routes in downtown Honolulu.

Oahu Transit Services said Routes 1, 2, 3, 9 and 13 are affected by the closure, which has resulted in no service in both directions of Hotel between Alakea St. and Nuuanu Ave.

OTS is asking westbound riders to board buses at the intersection of Hotel and Alakea; eastbound riders are asked to board at the intersection of Hotel and Nuuanu.

The emergency tree trimming is not expected to last long; the city anticipates Hotel to reopen around 5 p.m. today.
