Pearl Harbor to host Japanese fireworks display this summer

The U.S. Navy will host a Japanese fireworks display at Pearl Harbor this summer to commemorate the end of World War II.

The Navy said Monday Honolulu’s Japanese sister city Nagaoka will put on the fireworks show on Aug. 15. That’s the day Japan surrendered and ended the war in 1945.

The Navy says the event honors the memory of the war’s victims and celebrates 70 years of peace and friendship.

The fireworks will be launched off the west side of Ford Island.

Nagaoka is a city in Niigata prefecture that hosts one of Japan’s three largest fireworks festivals.

Honolulu and Nagaoka have been sister cities since 2012.
