Fireworks for the Fourth of July went on sale today at licensed retailers.

Fireworks sales for the Fourth of July are normally a fraction of the sales for New Year’s Eve.

The purchase of firecrackers requires a $25 permit that can be obtained from satellite city halls. But since Friday is a furlough day for county workers, the last day to obtain permits before July 4  is Thursday.

Fireworks can only legally be set off from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 4. It is illegal to set off fireworks above the first floor of any building, in any vehicle or near hospitals, nursing homes, schools, churches, hotels, parks  or on public sidewalks and roads.

There are also a number of legal aerial fireworks displays around Oahu scheduled for July 3 and July 4.
