New Hawaii chief justice to be sworn in next week

Associate Justice Mark Recktenwald will be sworn in as the state’s fifth justice at 4 p.m.  Sept. 14 at the Hawaii Supreme Court courtroom.

Recktenwald, 54, was unanimously confirmed by the state Senate last week as head of the five-member court and the state judiciary.

Associate Justice Paula Nakayama, who has been serving as the acting chief justice, will administer the oath.

Recktenwald replaces Ronald Moon who stepped down last week because of the constitutional requirement that justices and judges retire by age 70.
