A Chinatown building owner will be subject to a daily fine of $100 beginning tomorrow if the partially collapsed metal awning over a Nuuanu Avenue sidewalk is not replaced or repaired.

A city notice of order to the owner says the awning poses a safety hazard.

A Yellow Transportation truck struck the awning Sept. 3. Because of the awning’s precarious state, the city placed barriers on the sidewalk, requiring people to walk on the street for a stretch.

Bob Au, whose family owns the building at 1118 Nuuanu Ave., said he is waiting for payment from the trucker’s insurance company.

"I’m trying to accommodate the city as best I can," Au said.

Tim Bostock, Oktoberfest producer for the Honolulu Culture and Arts District, is concerned for the safety of revelers at Friday’s event. "I’m worried because there will be 4,000 to 5,000 people here," he said.
