Immigration official was Marine veteran

Donald A. Radcliffe, director of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in Hawaii from 1989 to 2003, died Sept. 20 of a heart attack at his home in Mililani. He was 63.

Radcliffe was responsible for enforcing immigration laws in Hawaii and other Pacific areas, including Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.

The work involved stopping the trafficking of illegal immigrant laborers, such as when a boat carrying about 60 Chinese was held on Guam in 1999.

"He enjoyed the work he did and the people he worked with," said his son, Brett.

Radcliffe served as a Marine in Vietnam from 1967 to 1970.

He was born in Chicago and spent his early years there.

He is survived by his wife Edith; son Brett; brother Nelson; and mother Helen.

A celebration of life will be held Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at O’Toole’s Irish Pub.

Funeral services will be held next Sunday at Nuuanu Mortuary. Visitation is from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by services. Casual attire. No flowers.
