Women voters — and potential female voters — feel disconnected from Hawaii politicians but represent a significant voting bloc that could influence the November elections, according to the first poll of its kind released today.

The poll by QMark Research for the Patsy T. Mink Political Action Committee found that 63 percent of Hawaii women across the islands would vote for a female candidate over an equally qualified male candidate.

A quarter of the women had tried to contact local politicians and 26 percent received no response. Another 36 percent got a response, but felt that the politician did not take their issue seriously or nothing happened to resolve the issue.

More than three-fourths of island women had never reached out to a local politician, but believed that their concerns might not be taken seriously. Another 19 percent said a local politician "definitely" would not care about their concerns.

QMark Research surveyed 671 Hawaii women 18 to 44 years old from July 20 to Aug. 21. The poll has a margin of error of 3.78 percentage points.
