Stand-up paddlers rescued off Portlock

Lifeguards and firefighters rescued two stand-up paddlers swept out to sea off Portlock today.

Friends of the two paddlers from Japan called for help about 4:45 p.m. after the couple was an hour late, said Buck Giles of the city Division of Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services.

Lifeguards on personal watercraft found the couple about a mile and a half east of Portlock Point about 5:20 p.m., and a fire rescue boat brought them back to the boat ramp at Hawaii Kai Marina, Giles said.

The woman, who is pregnant, had possible signs of hypothermia.

Giles cautioned inexperienced paddlers to beware of winds and currents that can pull a paddler out to sea.
