High surf advisory in effect until Thursday

Waves with 18- to 22-foot faces are expected on north shores today as waves generated by a storm in the Aleutians arrive in Hawaii.

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for north and east facing shores until 6 p.m. Thursday.

Surf with eight-foot faces is predicted today for east shores.

The surf is expected to build through the morning and peak this afternoon. The first rounds of the Billabong Pipe Masters in memory of Andy Irons contest, part of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, is being held this morning at the Backdoor and Pipeline surf breaks on Oahu’s North Shore.

Waves are reported to be in the six- to eight-foot range by local measurements, with higher sets.

A high surf advisory means that waves along affected shores will be higher than normal. Inexperienced beach-goers are urged to stay out of the water and away from the shore break.
