Gov says he’ll release names of inaugural donors

Gov. Neil Abercrombie says he’ll release the names of people who bought tickets to or tables at his inaugural ball.

KITV reported Thursday that Abercrombie agreed to release the names after critics complained of an earlier decision by his staff that the donors would not be identified. The critics said that could lead to influence peddling.

Donors paid $2,500 to $10,000 for tables at Thursday’s ball, which raised money to cover inaugural expenses. It was organized by a nonprofit group established by Abercrombie supporters that by law doesn’t have to disclose its donors.

Abercrombie’s decision makes him the first governor to release inaugural donor names. President Barack Obama disclosed his inaugural contributors in 2009.
