International soccer in Hawaii possible

Ferd Lewis

ESPN is behind an international soccer event that could bring professional teams from South Korea, Japan and Australia here for a globally shown tournament next year.

Rapidly developing plans call for a two-day event at Aloha Stadium in March 2012, according to people familiar with the venture but not authorized to speak at this time.

The concept would include a representative from Major League Soccer, Korea’s K-League, Japan’s J. League and Australia’s A-League.

Discussions have also reportedly been held with representatives from China, but that might be a longer shot, people involved said.

The concept is similar to the Pan-Pacific Championships that drew an announced two-night total of 38,205 to Aloha Stadium in 2008. That event included the Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo of the MLS, Sydney FC of Australia and Gamba Osaka of Japan.

Kamehameha graduate Brian Ching played for Houston, and his team is said to again be under consideration although the final call will be made by the MLS.

ESPN International would carry the competition overseas, and one of the ESPN platforms would likely provide the domestic portion.
