Wailuku Main Street sues national group over name

WAILUKU, Maui >> The Wailuku Main Street Association is suing the National Trust for Historic Preservation to continue using the term "Main Street" in its name.

The association argues in a lawsuit filed earlier this month that it has been a member of the national organization for at least 20 years. The lawsuit also argues the preservation group can’t stop the association from using "Main Street," because it describes an actual Wailuku location.

Board Member Sam Clark tells The Maui News that the National Main Street program has always accepted the Wailuku association’s name.

The newspaper reports officials with the National Trust for Historic Preservation refused to comment.

The organization told Wailuku Main Street in letters earlier this year that the trademarked "Main Street" name is reserved for groups that meet its criteria.
