Mid-Pacific hires boys basketball coach

Jason Hopkins, who coached Cochise College in Arizona the past year, has been named head coach of the Mid-Pacific boys basketball program.

Born in Honolulu, Hopkins grew up in Edmonds, Wash., and attended Madrona, a K-8 school where current MPI President Joe Rice was principal at the time.

Hopkins played professionally in the U.S. minor leagues and in China. He helped Cochise win a Region One National Junior College Championship.

Kamehameha lineman eyes Utes

Kiha Sai has given the University of Utah an oral commitment to play football, according to the Deseret News.

Sai, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound junior offensive lineman, has an older brother, Kapua, at Utah.

All-Star basketball in Kona

Hawaii Island Hoops, a basketball organization on the Big Island, will host a senior all-star event on May 8 at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kona.

The event includes boys and girls all-star games, a 3-point shootout and a slam dunk contest. For more information, call Andy Smith at 937-3082.
