Gymnast Yee in Junior Olympics

Hawaiian Island Twisters gymnast Joshua Yee qualified for next week’s Junior Olympic National Championship based on his performance at last weekend’s Region 1 Men’s Championships in Oakland, Calif.

Yee, a junior at Thompson Academy, placed eighth out of 71 in the 16-18 Level 10 Division. He was fourth on pommel horse, fifth on parallel bars and seventh on vault. The Mililani resident will next compete at the Junior Olympics, which begin Wednesday in Long Beach, Calif.

Yee was among 15 male gymnasts from Hawaii who competed at Levels 5-10. Only Levels 9 and 10 compete at the JOs.

HIT teammate Jason Redlew (Level 5) earned an all-around medal when finishing seventh. He was fourth in vault and fifth in high bar.

Also receiving medals were: Makana Wong, HIT, Level 7, fifth in high bar and eight in rings; Jonathon Freitas, Island Tumblers Gym Level 6, 10th in vault; and Liam Hill, ITG, Level 5, second in pommel horse, fifth in high bar.

The other Hawaii regional qualifiers were, from HIT: Michael Leong, Level 9; Heaton Powell and Copeland Talkington, Level 6; and Rashod Tanner, Gavin Ryno, David Kai Smith and Michael Eader, Level 5.

Also, Kody Dominguez, Level 7, Pacific Gymnastics; and Gavin Dunston and Alec Tilbrook, ITG, Level 5.

Motocross season continues

The 10th race of the Hawaii Motocross Association season is scheduled for Sunday at the Kahuku Motocross Track. Entry forms are available at participating dirtbike shops. All racers must be current HMA members.

Kalamazoo seeks Hawaii runner

Kalamazoo (Mich.) Marathon organizers are looking for a runner from Hawaii to complete the 50-State Challenge field for the May 8 event.

The runner would receive free entry into the race and a new pair of New Balance shoes.
