Night dive proves deadly for skin diver

A 48-year-old man apparently drowned while skin diving in waters off Kahana Bay Friday night.

The man was night skin diving with his son when they got caught in a current about 10 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. James Todd.

The son was able to make it to shore but the father was taken out to sea by the current, Todd said.

A Honolulu Fire Department helicopter dropped rescue personnel into the water and workers were able to retrieve the man in about 10 to 15 feet of water about 200 to 300 yards offshore, Todd said.
