State legislators meet next week on cybercrime

Hawaii lawmakers are gathering next week for a meeting on the growing sophistication of cybercrime. Republican members of the state House of Representatives are leading the briefing at the Hawaii Capitol on Tuesday.

Maui Rep. George Fontaine, a retired police captain, says Internet attacks can come from anyone and cause financial, social and emotional damage.

Ewa Beach Rep. Kymberly Pine says she believes state laws should be strengthened to give more protection to Hawaii residents.

Speakers include Honolulu prosecutors, a forensic computer crime expert, police and victims of cybercrime.

Cybercrime includes harassment, financial fraud, identity theft, stalking, bullying and luring minors using the Internet.
