Typhoon Ma-on to reach Japan as Category 3 storm

Typhoon Ma-on is approaching southern Japan, and will begin to curve northeastward Monday as a dangerous Category 4 typhoon, with an estimated landfall over southern Honshu of Tuesday morning as a Category 3 storm.

While no landfall is expected Monday, the southeast coast of Japan will experience increasing wind and rain, along with heavy surf.

Elsewhere, moisture from Ma-on will move through the Shanghai area, bring showers and thunderstorms to the city. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also develop over the South China Sea and adjacent areas of southeastern China.

In Australia, a front just off the east coast of the country over the Tasman Sea will move slowly eastward into open waters. Nonetheless, scattered rain is likely along the east coast from Brisbane through Sydney in the morning through the afternoon. The heaviest rain will fall in the Sydney area.

A high pressure system will move through the Great Australian Bight, replacing this front and providing dry conditions for much of the eastern half of the country. More showers are possible in southern Western Australia due to a weak storm that will move through the area.
