Big Island water plan gets hearings next month

The state water commission plans to hold two public hearings next month on updates to the Big Island water use plan.

Hawaii County prepared the plan to guide the long-range development and conservation of its water resources.

William Tam, the deputy director for water at the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, says the plans will provide valuable guidance to the water commission as it strives to balance the water needs of humans and the environment while seeking to ensure the sustainability of natural resources.

The first hearing is scheduled for Aug. 3 at Konawaena High School in Kealakekua. The second is due to be held Aug. 4 at Waiakea High School in Hilo.

Those unable to attend the meetings may mail comments to the commission through Aug. 18.
