Crash kills 2 people on H-1 in Ewa
Two people died and a 15-year-old boy was hurt this morning in a single-vehicle crash that prompted police to shut down the Waianae-bound lanes of the H-1 freeway in Kapolei for more than three hours.
Police said a 21-year-old Waipahu woman was heading toward Waianae about 6:20 a.m. in a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup when she lost control near the Kualakai Parkway offramp, causing the pickup to climb the right shoulder and overturn.
Both the driver and a 27-year-old Waianae man who was riding in the truck died at the scene. A 15-year-old Waipahu boy was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in fair condition, police said.
Only three people were riding in the single-cab pickup. An Emergency Medical Services spokesman said the teen was the only one wearing a seat belt.
Police could not determine whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
Police diverted west-bound motorists off the H-1 at Kualakai Parkway during the investigation and reopened the freeway about 9:40 a.m.
The crash brought the number of traffic fatalities on Oahu up to 20 so far this year, compared to 16 at this time last year.
