Strong quake strikes off Oregon; no tsunami expected

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon Wednesday afternoon but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said.

The quake, which was centered 150 miles west of Bandon, Ore., at a depth of 8.7 miles, hit at 2:41 p.m. in Oregon (12:41 p.m. Hawaii time), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin saying that the quake is not expected to generate a Pacific-wide tsunami.
