Man arrested after allegedly breaking into Waipio home, firing gun

A 37-year-old man is in police custody after allegedly breaking into a home in Waipio, firing a gun and fleeing into a nearby townhouse complex with a hostage Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police said the incident began with a CrimeStoppers tip of a robbery suspect in car at a self storage place on Ka Uka Boulevard.

The man wrestled with officers and ran to Mele Place, where he entered a garage and forced his way into the house, then ransacked the place, police said.

A 56-year-old woman in the house tried to stop the man from entering, but he fled with her 27-year-old son out another door.

The man then left the house and was captured by police after failing to start a van across the street in the Villages at Waipio complex.

Police said a responding officer and a witness heard a gunshot while the man was in the Mele Place house.

Officers arrested him for first-degree burglary, two counts of kidnapping, three firearms violations, reckless endangering, attempted auto theft and breaking into an auto.
