Medical Examiner identifies man killed in weekend crash

A 27-year-old Florida man who suffered critical injuries Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle accident died Sunday evening, police said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as Peejay Facun, of Jacksonville, Fla. He was a member of the Coast Guard assigned to the Honolulu-based cutter Rush, the Coast Guard said.

An autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of death.

Facun was driving a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on Sand Island Parkway when he lost control of his speeding motorcycle and crashed at about 3:40 p.m., according to a police report. He struck a street sign and a street-light post just east of Training Access Road.

Facun suffered head and internal injuries and was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died the next day.

He was wearing a helmet, police said.

His death is the 41st fatality on Oahu’s roads this year compared with 32 the same time last year.
