Trespasser in Makiki bites off part of police officer’s finger

A 41-year-old male police officer was taken to the hospital in serious condition with a hand injury this morning, according to Emergency Medical Services officials. Paramedics transported the officer at 6:28 a.m. from 1114 Wilder Ave.
A 41-year-old male police officer lost a part of his finger this morning while attempting to arrest a suspect for trespassing in Makiki.
The officer, who was taken to the hospital in serious condition, was responding to a trespass complaint at 1114 Wilder Ave. near Makiki Cemetery.
When he and other HPD officers got to the scene at 6 a.m., they confirmed with the property manager that the 52-year-old man was trespassing.
When the HPD officer attempted to make the arrest, the suspect resisted and bit off the tip of the officer’s finger. The suspect was subsequently arrested for assault and trespassing.
Police officials have not disclosed whether physicians were able to reattach the officer’s finger.
