A human fetus, whose gender could not be determined by Maui authorities, was believed to have been flushed into the island’s sewer system and found in the Kahului Wastewater Plant last week.

Maui Police said a sanitation worker found the fetus, about seven-inches long, at 1:13 p.m. May 22 in the wastewater catchment receptacle.

Maui’s medical examiner could not conduct an autopsy due to its size. However, the medical examiner determined the fetus could not have survived outside of the womb. Its presence at the Wastewater Plant was most likely the result of a miscarriage being flushed into the sewage system, officials said.

Police and the county Prosecuting Attorney classified the case as non-criminal after determining the fetus was not a person who was born and was alive.
