Photo gallery: High surf on Oahu’s north shore

Surf is still high and dangerous for inexperienced swimmers and surfers, but a high surf warning for west shores of Hawaii island is now an advisory.

A high surf advisory is also in effect for the north shores of Oahu, Kauai, Niihau, Molokai and Maui and the west shores of Lanai and Kahoolawe. Officials at the National Weather Service said waves of 14- to 18-feet on north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau are expected to drop below advisory levels this morning.

Waves of 10- to 15-feet on north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui and 8- to 10-feet on west shores of the Big Island are also expected to drop overnight.

Weather officials advise beachgoers that large breaking waves and shore break along with strong rip currents can make swimming dangerous and to heed advice from lifeguards.
