The leading edge of the lava flow has not advanced in two weeks, but several breakouts remain active and are continuing to advance toward Pahoa, Hawaii County Civil Defense said Saturday morning after an aerial assessment.

The active breakouts, which do not pose an immediate threat to area residents, are below Apaa Street in the area of the cemetery and several areas above the Pahoa Recycling and Transfer Station.

The leading edge of the flow from Kilauea Volcano has remained stalled about 480 feet above Pahoa Village Road since Oct. 30.

The closest active flow to Pahoa Village Road is about 0.4 miles mauka, near the cemetery, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

An active lobe above the transfer station was about 250 yards above Apaa Street on Friday and has widened over the past two days.

Pilot reports and webcam views indicated the formation of a new breakout near Puu Oo, about a mile northeast of the so-called June 27 vent, between Friday and Saturday. Activity from this new breakout slowed on Saturday but continues to be monitored.

Scientists also observed an active breakout about 3 miles below Puu Oo that was burning a small area of vegetation on Friday.

The breakout on the south side of the flow on Apaa Street is widening and burning asphalt road material. The other breakouts are burning only vegetation.

Smoke conditions remain moderate to heavy with variable winds blowing the smoke north-northeast toward the Ainaloa, Hawaiian Paradise Park and Keaau areas, according to Civil Defense.

Pahoa Village Road between Apaa Street and Post Office Road remains closed, with access restricted to area residents. Access to business and commercial areas of Pahoa is available through Pahoa Village Road at the intersection of Highways 130 and 132 and Post Office Road.

Kilauea Volcano has been erupting continuously for more than 30 years.
