LAS VEGAS » Las Vegas police say a man shot and wounded by officers at a hotel early Saturday wanted to be killed by officers based on letters the man wrote.

Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said Wednesday that 52-year-old Patrick Joel Stoltz from Aurora, Colorado, checked into the Shalimar Hotel north of the Stratosphere on Friday morning.

Police responding to a call found Stolz in his room with the door open, holding a gun.

Police say Stolz ran into the parking lot pointing his gun at police. That’s when two officers fired eight times at Stolz, hitting him once in the back of the head. He was treated at UMC Trauma Center and arrested.

McMahill says the man’s gun wasn’t loaded.

Stolz faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer.
