PAHOA » A leading edge of lava from the Kilauea Volcano that’s been sluggishly moving toward Pahoa’s main highway has not advance since Tuesday.

Hawaii County Civil Defense officials said Wednesday that the lava remains about a half-mile upslope of the Highway 130 and Pahoa Village Road intersection and is about 660 yards from the Pahoa Marketplace.  

The flow has advanced about 165 yards since Dec. 27, volcano scientists said.  

A small brush fire broke out Tuesday as the active edge of the flow made contact with light brush and vegetation, Civil Defense officials said.

The fire was contained and no brush fire was reported on Wednesday. 

Surface breakouts continue upslope of the front but are not an immediate threat to residents, officials said. 

Many small breakouts were also active along the length of the flow up to about 2 miles upslope from the flow’s front, as well as about 2 miles downslope from Pu’u O’o, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists. 

Smoke conditions were light to moderate Wednesday morning with a light variable wind.
