No tsunami threat from 6.6 magnitude South Pacific earthquake

An earthquake, with an estimated 6.6 magnitude, struck at about 5 a.m. Hawaii time in Papua New Guinea.

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii from a strong earthquake in Papua New Guinea early Friday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the magnitude at 6.6. It was centered about 120 miles south of Taron, Papua New Guinea and 446 miles east northeast of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake, at about 5 a.m. Hawaii time, does not pose a Pacific-wide threat, based on available data.
