Morning showers on Oahu should clear Friday afternoon or evening, washing away the vog and leaving cool and pleasant tradewind weather in its wake.

Radar and satellite images showed a line of showers moving over Oahu and beginning to affect Maui County Friday morning.

“The showers have been light to moderate and moving along through the morning,” forecasters said in a weather advisory.

“Southerly winds may become gusty ahead of the front,” forecasters said. But the winds are not expected to be as strong as last weekend.

Tradewinds behind the front will keep the volcanic haze away through Sunday. But another approaching cold front will shift winds to the southeast again Sunday night, bringing the vog back to Oahu through the middle of next week.

The current front is expected to weaken and stall over Maui and the Big Island Saturday and could bring windward and mauka showers therethrough the weekend.

Temperatures at Lihue and Hilo reached record levels for the date on Thursday.

The high of 88 degrees at the Hilo airport breaks the old record of 86 set in 1992. In Lihue, the high of 84 degrees tied a record set in 1973.

More pleasant temperatures are expected through the weekend as tradewinds return.

Mostly sunny skies are forecast for Saturday and Sunday in Honolulu and south shores of Oahu, with northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, highs between 77 and 83 degrees, and lows in the 60s at night.

A high surf advisory is posted for north and west shores of Oahu, Kauai, Niihau and Molokai; north shores of Maui and west shores of Hawaii island because of a large west-northwest swell.

Wave faces of 12 to 18 feet are expected on north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau. North shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui should see surf of 10 to 15 feet Friday and west shores of Oahu and Molokai may see 8 to 12 foot surf.

Kauai and Niihau should get the largest surf and may block some of the surf for to the other islands.. A wrap around west shores will also bring above-normal, but below-advisory surf to south shores.

Some town spots on Oahu’s south shore could see wave faces of 3 to 7 feet, forecasters said.

The advisory is posted until 6 p.m. Saturday.

Forecasters said the swell should gradually subside Saturday into early next week, when another west-northwest swell arrives.
