Motorists will again need to pay to park in the Honolulu Zoo parking lot starting Wednesday, city officials said Tuesday.

Republic Parking Northwest Inc. will assume management of the 212-stall lot then. A manual collection and monitoring system will be placed at the entrances and exits of the lot until new parking pay stations can be installed, the city said.

The cost of parking will go back to $1 an hour, with a four-hour maximum, beginning Wednesday.

Moana Parking Management LLC, the former concessionaire, filed a Chapter 7 voluntary petition with the Delaware Bankruptcy Court on April 17. A few days later, anonymous parties damaged the pay machines rendering them inoperable. Motorists have been parking there for free ever since.

Republic Parking won the 12-month revocable permit contract through a competitive bidding process, city officials said. The vendor will pay the city $52,000 a month, or 73 percent of gross income, whichever is greater.

The stalls are supposed to be for zoo and Kapiolani Park users only.
