Stolen truck leads to robbery charges against two Hawaii island men

The discovery of a stolen truck on Tuesday led to the arrest and charging today of two men for a previously unsolved Aug. 4 robbery in Kailua-Kona. 

Hawaii County police said on Aug. 4, a 32-year-old Kailua-Kona man was robbed of his bag in a shopping center parking lot near Kuakini Highway and Palani Road. 

On Tuesday, police officers spotted a pickup truck in Kailua-Kona that had been reporrted stolen Monday from a Papala Place home in Kailua-Kona. 

Officers arrested Alihilani Stringert, 28, and a 37-year-old woman, both of Kailua-Kona, on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. 

Stringert was also arrested on suspicion of the robbery and other offenses. The woman was released Wednesday without charges. 

Stringert was charged today Wednesday with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of robbery and one count of theft. The second count of robbery was for a Sept. 10 purse-snatching from a Captain Cook woman in Kailua-Kona. The theft charge was for a Sept. 25 theft of a skateboard and clothing from a Kainaliu store. 

His bail was set at $61,000. 

Meanwhile police arrested Tuesday Christiansan cqKaawa, 25, on suspicion of the Aug. 4 robbery. 

He was charged with robbery and his bail was set at $25,000. 

It is unclear how the stolen truck led to Kaawa’s arrest. 

Kaawa and Stringert are scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
