Suspect is charged in stabbing on Maui

Maui police have arrested and charged a 36-year-old man, with no local address, in connection with the stabbing of a 45-year-old woman at her Paia home Tuesday.

Officers responding to a report of abuse of a household member shortly before 9:15 a.m. at the residence on Hana Highway found the woman, who reported her boyfriend had stabbed her multiple times after an argument.

Medics transported the woman with non-life-threatening injuries to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police arrested Keola Vasconcellos shortly before 9:30 a.m. and charged him with one count of second-degree assault and one count of abuse of a family or household member. His bail was set at $6,000.

Pedestrian critically injured in accident

Police were investigating a critical pedestrian accident Tuesday night on South King Street just Ewa of University Avenue. A witness said the victim was a man in a wheelchair.

Police closed South King Street from Hausten Street to University Avenue while they conducted their investigation.

No details were immediately available.

3 hikers stranded by high water rescued

Firefighters assisted by the Maui Fire Department’s helicopter rescued three hikers stranded by high water on the Commando Trail in East Maui on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters from Paia, along with the department’s helicopter and a Kahului rescue crew, arrived at about 2:30 p.m. The helicopter located the hikers and airlifted them to a landing zone in a pasture near the trailhead. All three were uninjured.

The hikers were 2 miles up the trail and on their way back when they became trapped by high water at an area known as the “lava tube.” In that part of the trail, the only way out is to walk through an irrigation tunnel. The stream water was high and moving too swiftly through the tunnel, so the hikers called emergency dispatchers for help.

A 27-year-old Makawao man was hiking with friends, a 32-year-old man and 38-year-old woman visiting from Laguna Beach, Calif.

Multicar Kauai crash sends 9 to hospital

Nine people were transported to the hospital after they were involved in a three-car collision Monday on Kauai.

At about 7 p.m. Monday, a Toyota sport utility vehicle driven by a 62-year-old Koloa man was heading south on Kuhio Highway near Princeville Airport when it crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming Dodge sedan operated by a 55-year-old Princeville woman, according to police.

The SUV then crashed head-on into a Chrysler van driven by a 36-year-old California man traveling north with six passengers.

The SUV driver was ejected from his vehicle in the crash. He was transported to Wilcox Hospital and medevaced in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center. Police said he was upgraded to stable condition Tuesday morning.

Police said the 55-year-old woman was transported to Wilcox with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Chrysler driver and his passengers were transported to Wilcox, where they were evaluated and released.

Police closed the highway for three hours to conduct an investigation. Lanes reopened at 11:15 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
