Hawaii County police investigate possible traffic death of man in Puna

Hawaii County police are investigating a traffic accident Saturday night that may have led to the death of a 62-year-old Washington state man.

Responding to an 8:38 p.m. call, officers found the man dead in a 2015 Hyundai four-door-sedan in the middle of Route 137 in Puna.

Police said there were signs that the car might have hit something on Route 137, the Kalapana-Kapoho Road, a tenth of mile south of the 17-mile-marker.

The man was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Sunday.

Police are awaiting autopsy results to see if the man died of a medical condition, before counting the death as a traffic fatality.

Anyone with information about crash is asked to call Officer Clarence Acob at 935-3311.
