Hawaii County police are investigating a drive-by shooting incident that occurred early this morning in the Hilo area.

Police said that a 23-year-old Keaau man reported shortly after midnight that occupants of a late-model white four-door sedan were shooting at a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, in which he was riding in the upper Kaumana Drive area.

Responding officers spotted the white car traveling east on Puainako Avenue extension and tried to stop it, but the car failed to stop. Officers terminated the pursuit because of hazardous conditions, police said.

The truck sustained damages from the gunshots and was eventually disabled. Detectives have recovered the truck for evidence processing.

None of the truck’s three occupants sustained any injuries in the incident, which is being classified as a first-degree attempted murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder.

Police also initiated a resisting an order to stop case. In addition, upon finding that a house in a Gentry Homes subdivision had been hit by an apparent errant bullet, police opened a separate case classified as first-degree reckless endangering.

An all-points bulletin was issued for a white 1995 Toyota Avalon sedan, with license plate HWM 818.

Police advise anyone spotting the car to refrain from approaching it.
