Firefighters airlift 4 stranded hikers from East Maui rock ledge
Firefighters rescued four people in their 20s today after they became stuck on a rock ledge on a trail in East Maui.
A witness reported to firefighters about 4:30 p.m. that four people were stuck on a ledge below a lava tube on the Commando Trail, a Maui Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters used a helicopter to pick up the hikers — a man and a woman from Maui and a man and a woman from Washington state — and took them safely to a landing zone.

Has anyone wondered why firemen are tasked to address the problems of this article? Firemen are supposed to fight fires instead of bailing out idiots off dangerous hiking trails. Fire fighters and aviation is strange? How come para-medic are connected with the fire department and not another organization? Did’t know firemen were connected with medical professions? Seems like they are the “jack of all trades”. Sorry to get off the subject, but are any fees being charged to those rescued off the dangerous trails? If one calls for an ambulance unless you have emergency insurance the fees can be costly? Helicopter operations are costly and using this expensive means to transport people off the dangerous trails that they intentionally embarked upon should be reimbursed instead the taxpayer picking up the tab Come on money can be made!
