A transformer and pole fire caused power outages this morning in Kalaeloa.

The Navy said it will take most of today to restore electrical power to portions of Kalaeloa. The power outage was caused by a transformer and pole fire early this morning.

Honolulu fire officials said the utility pole fire was reported around 12:30 a.m. at Nassau Street and Bougainville Avenue.

But firefighters had to wait several hours while Navy contractors de-energized the power lines.

The fire and a small brush fire near the pole were extinguished at 4:03 a.m.

The Navy said Hawaiian Electric was working to replace a few blown fuses at their substation.

Once replaced, power will be restored to the majority of the area to include the National Guard and most commercial buildings and housing.

However, power will not be restored immediately to the circuit servicing the beach, the Coast Guard station, golf course and some housing on northeast corner of Kalaeloa. Those repairs are estimated to take the entire day and most likely into the evening.

The power outage also affected the mini mart and beach cottages as well as a number of housing units in the area.
