No injuries reported in fire at Keeaumoku apartments

No one was injured in a two-alarm fire at an eight-story apartment building on Keeaumoku Street this morning, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

Fire officials responded to the blaze at 10:09 a.m. at the Mokulani Apartments located at 1716Keeaumoku Street. Nine fire companies staffed with 31 personnel were on the scene, finding smoke and flames emanating from a seventh floor unit.

“Personnel established command and commenced with high-rise procedures securing the building’s elevators and lobby. Personnel made their way to the seventh floor unit involved in fire and initiated an interior fire attack. The fire was brought under control at 10:30 a.m. and fully extinguished by 10:44 a.m,” according to an HFD news release.

Fire officials said no one was in the unit at the time of the fire and the building’s fire alarm system was activated.

The American Red Cross is assisting residents who evacuated.

The cause of the fire was undetermined. Damages to the unit totaled $170,000, Jenkins said, and damages to the unit above and vehicles below were about $8,000.

The Star Advertiser needs to tighten-up its copy editing and proofreading. There is no “Keamoku” Street, and neither is there a “Mokolani Apartments” complex. The street’s name is “Ke’eaumoku,” and the apartments are named “Mokulani.” Auwe! As the Star Advertiser has a virtual monopoly on local print news, it must at least make an attempt at being accurate in its spelling of Hawaiian words.
