Teen, 3-year-old among 5 killed in California head-on crash

RIO VISTA, Calif. » A 3-year-old child and a teenager were among the five people killed when their small car slammed into an oncoming pickup truck on a two-lane highway in Northern California, authorities said today.
The five victims were traveling in a Honda Civic that was in a passing lane when it crashed head-on Saturday with a Chevy Silverado pickup truck about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento, the California Highway Patrol said.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office said Sunday three of the dead were: Annalicia Mona Montoya, 21, Aaliyah Buenrostro, 17, and 3-year-old Adelaynna G. Ortiz of Modesto.
The names of another woman and young child who died in the crash will be released after family is notified.
The driver of the Civic was trying to pass another vehicle on eastbound State Route 12 near Rio Vista, lost control while attempting to get back into her lane, and spun into a westbound lane, California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Bradley said. The Civic was broadsided by the oncoming Chevy Silverado.
The four people in the Silverado, a couple with two older children, were hospitalized but not seriously injured, the CHP said. All were wearing seat belts, and the truck’s air bags deployed.
It was unclear whether the people in the Civic were wearing seat belts. Only one child seat was found inside, Bradley said.
The area had periodic rain Saturday, but it was unclear if a slick road was a factor in the car losing control.

A lane change is one of the most dangerous maneuvers a driver must make on a typical day. It’ll never be known for certain why the deceased driver tried to pass the slower vehicle or just how slow the other vehicle was going to prompt her to pass. I just know that I cringe a little every time I see multiple cars overtake and pass a single slow-moving motorist who, for whatever reason, is unable or unwilling to keep up with the flow of traffic.
I don’t know all the facts, but why risk your life to get to your destination a few minutes sooner. A little patience goes a long way.
Headline says it was a “head on” crash….the report says the Honda Civic was “broadsided.” Hmmmm.
