An eight-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department and former University of Hawaii volleyball player was arrested Tuesday in Waikiki by the state attorney general’s office on suspicion of bribery, prostitution and illegal use of a computer.

Officer Maulia La Barre was arrested last night by investigators with the Department of the Attorney General for attempted bribery, prostitution and unauthorized use of a computer in the first degree.

La Barre, a former standout middle blocker for the UH men’s volleyball team between 2001 to 2006, was booked by the Sheriff’s Department and has been released pending investigation. Charges have not been filed.

HPD Deputy Chief Marie McCauley said police assisted in the arrest and have opened an internal administrative investigation.

The officer will be placed on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.

“The Honolulu Police Department holds its personnel to a higher standard of conduct. Illegal or unethical behavior is not tolerated and any alleged breach of these standards is taken very seriously,” McCauley said.

Sounds like Ms. Wille is seeking revenge for losing her card. Aaahhh, nothing like a scorned Councilperson !!!

  2. aiea7 says:

is he the former volleyball player for the warriors? also was he not a volunteer coach?

    • pohaku96744 says:

You might be right…..just remember police officers are a reelection of the community. If the community has stupid people, the police department will have stupid people. He may not be guilty, but he sure did something stupid…..and he has a college degree, probably sociology. He also passed psychology interview done by a psychologist AND an polygraph administered by a police detective. He was either stupid when they hired him which makes the people that selected him stupid or he got stupid after they hired him.

      • pohaku96744 says:

reflection, meant to say…….public school education.

        • Cellodad says:

Are you nuts? Or are you just pretending to be nuts?

        • pohaku96744 says:

A little of both. I can criticize, retired from the department and am an alumnus(UH). Bought lots of drugs as cop………later took bombs apart…………one requires you to be a good actor……..the other crazy………..after standing over a pipe bomb……..pucker factor stops kicking in.

        • PCWarrior says:

          Thanks for your service pohaku!

        • pohaku96744 says:

Thanks PC….generation is way different today, boomers supervising the mix bag of generations only end up on collision course. It is also the same in Federal service as well. I have 4 retired military working for me, they say same thing in the military.

      • residenttaxpayer says:

Not necessarily stupid…perhaps more like a lack of ethics and morality….people can have education and intelligence but that doesn’t mean they have ethics and principles…..

      • ricekidd says:

YOu dont ahve to be a genius to get into HPD…..any Moke gets in, look at the officers that they hire…. Thug looking non smiling folk…
And Youre right on the spot! uneducated-noncommon sense having community creates these type of undeducated-no common sense having police…
but again “nobodies seems to notice…nobody seems to care…” People of this state is so pathetic and dumb that as long as it does not happen to them or to their people they dont care.

        • pohaku96744 says:

best sergeant was as moke, some where along the way he matured, kept us out of trouble not by hiding things kept checking on us, made sure we we’re doing what we were suppose to he doing.

        • makiki808 says:

Agree with you!!! All you need is a GED and that’s part of the minimal requirement.

    • lwandcah says:

Too bad. Met him a number of times and he seemed like a good person. Just goes to show, none of us are perfect.

    • paniolo says:

      Yes, and yes.

  3. Bully says:

I think the State busted him and not HPD. HPD tends to turn a blind eye to their own.

  4. SHOPOHOLIC says:

Guess the pay isn’t enough or the union dues are too much. This department has SERIOUS ethics issues…starting from the top.

  5. cojef says:

At least it’s a start? Hopefully!

  6. lespark says:

Dui, abuse, malicious conversion, forgery, prostitutuion, bribery, assault, hit and run. Kealoha is doing a heck of a job.

  7. browniegirl says:

If he were Billy, he would get to stay on the job, with pay, no problem.

  8. Mr Mililani says:

    He’ll walk. They all do.

  9. papio5 says:

The PR staff is hard at work.
“The Honolulu Police Department holds its personnel to a higher standard of conduct. Illegal or unethical behavior is not tolerated and any alleged breach of these standards is taken very seriously,” McCauley said.

    • SHOPOHOLIC says:

Isn’t McCauley the one that always looks like Grumpy Cat with the perpetual frown in all the photos of the HPD hierarchy?

      • HawaiiCheeseBall says:

That’s her! She speaks with a Boston accent. Met her a few times on some community policing things. She came off as a real straight, hard nosed cop.

        • SHOPOHOLIC says:

Has to, working around all da kine good ‘ol boyz after all those years. Guess it helps being a hard nosed Bostonian type with the perfect cop name: McCauley

  10. Cellodad says:

If the allegations are warranted, he has no business as an officer in our community.

    • SHOPOHOLIC says:

Methinks Officer Labarre needs a cup o Joe

    • pohaku96744 says:

And he is stupid…. using a government computer to do his business…. Know why FBI is involved, issued computer was through a federal grant and they can recover all kinds of data…it is going to be very interesting to see what was recovered….and who he was communcating to. Which might make him a rat….. in which case he is stupid….a cop that’s a rat in prison….stupid …..

    • kaleo_1 says:

Negative, he will not walk. He will be investigated by the FBI and the US District Attorney will prosecute.

  11. tygah says:

The media thanks HPD for the weekly news. “Unpaid leave” that’s a change.

  12. Jerry_D says:

Busted for prostitution and illegal use of a computer? Imagine that…a REAL cop doing stripper-grams and male escort. haha!
    ‪#‎buffedinblue_dot_com‬

  13. SHOPOHOLIC says:

Wait…didn’t HPD cry foul a few years ago when their right to S K R E W prostitutes on the job, under the guise of “investigation” was taken away? Winnaz, baby!!

  14. RCHamakua says:

Once more HSA demonstrates its true colors and respect for UHM. Maulia is shown in his Rainbow Volleyball uniform twice to tell us that he was a UHM student athlete, something we all knew. Why does the HSA not show him in his HPD uniform? After all, he was a cop AFTER he was a student athlete, and perhaps his problems, if he is ever convicted, began with him being a cop and not playing volleyball at UHM!!
HSA has long established a bias against UHM, and this is just another classic example of a paper that cannot live with a greater University than the self serving newspaper that is more interested in its ads than real news.

  15. FARKWARD says:

“Charges have not been filed.” And, the Commenters of the S/A Kangaroo Court, herein and hereon, have already convicted him. The only charge he may actually be guilty of is “unauthorized use of a computer in the first degree.” Meanwhile, in Hawaii. we have Politicians who are definitely guilty of more serious Crimes–with absolutely NO CONSEQUENCES.

    • readergirl says:

IRT Farkward: Exactly what I was thinking, charges have not been filed, yet everyone is prosecuting him already like he is guilty. Sheesh and the SA splashes it all over like he is guilty. Got to love the only paper we have.

  16. Kalaheo1 says:

“The Honolulu Police Department holds its personnel to a higher standard of conduct. Illegal or unethical behavior is not tolerated and any alleged breach of these standards is taken very seriously,” McCauley said.

Except documented behavior of HPD doesn’t support this claim. For example the drunk hit and run driver who was driven to the other side of the island for his alcohol test and then was allowed to refuse it anyway. Why didn’t HPD arrest this man?

  17. Bully says:

Shame on him. I always saw him giving jay walking tickets downtown. I guess he had a little side business going on with Chinatown prostitutes. State investigators probably caught him in a craigslist sting. Pretty good catch, not good for HPD who probably had no clue.

  18. lespark says:

Please, Big Chief Kealoha a statement.

  19. CKMSurf says:

And another bad egg? Clean house starting from the top.

  20. BigOpu says:

Missing the details. What was the bribe, how did he prostitute, and what was illegal about his computer time?

    • HRS134 says:

      I’m wondering the same thing.

      • pohaku96744 says:

issued piece of equipment, acquired through federal grants. Laptops HPD uses is considered HPD property. Federal government knows everything…. State has a former HPD investigator who us as wizard at cracking in to comptuters AND feds trained him.

        • pohaku96744 says:

when I was in vice watched him sit and capture data off the stations in/out ID card reader checking on this detectives, checking to see if mileage matched their claims, learnt from him, used same method when hired by feds fire people making false claims…

  21. residenttaxpayer says:

“Illegal use of a computer”…..who’s’ computer?….and was done that was illegal…not enough information.

  22. ricekidd says:

Another HPD Screw up??? So Chief whats up with your boys in Blue?? Uniform alone is not getting any booty?
HPD must stand for Hawaii Pathetic Disgraceful… Go get laid by your girlfriend or boy friend…. you wanna hook then go to Bunny Ranch in Nevada, its legal there…

  23. cwurr says:

Held to a higher standard? Is that sarcasm? Wow, the rest of us must be really low-brows.

  24. HAJAA1 says:

    What an empty article.
