Maui police investigating deaths of Kahului couple as murder-suicide

Maui police say a 69-year-old Kahului man apparently killed his 67-year-old ex-wife with a “bladed instrument” and then shot and killed himself with a handgun today.

Police have classified their deaths as an apparent murder-suicide.

Police have identified the couple as Dominador Basuel and Leticia Basuel.

Police found a man and woman dead this morning at a Kahului home off of Akalei Place, according to a police news release.

Police dispatch received a call at 9:57 a.m. from a man who asked that police be sent to the residence.

When Wailuku patrol officers arrived at 9:58 a.m., they found a man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head outside the home, the release said. They found a small caliber handgun near his body.

Officers checked inside the home and found the body of a woman with wounds “consistent with that of a bladed instrument.”

They were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police have opened a second-degree murder and a suicide case, which are pending autopsies and further investigation.
