Kayakers rescued in rough seas off Mokuleia

Firefighters, lifeguards and the Coast Guard rescued three people in rough sea and weather conditions off Mokuleia on the North Shore early this afternoon.
Firefighters brought two men to shore after they got into trouble while kayaking at about 12:20 p.m.
A 28-year-old woman was swept further out, past the surf break, without safety gear or a kayak, said Shayne Enright, an Emergency Services spokeswoman.
Enright said the weather was windy and rainy and waves were breaking with 6- to 10-foot faces.
A Coast Guard plane spotted the woman and lifeguards brought her back to shore on a rescue watercraft.
Enright said the woman and her husband, who was rescued in the kayak, were visiting from California. A 63-year-old Maui man, the woman’s father, was also rescued in a kayak.

I believe this is the second recent incident involving rescue of those using kayaks in what I would deem to be adverse sea conditions. While not wanting deter anyone from enjoying their time out on the water…you need to exercise precautions and not place yourself or rescuers at risk.

Another good job by our rescue professionals. Know your limits!
Another big Mahalo to our water safety heroes. And another example of having to save people that have no business being in the ocean in kayaks in big surf on the North Shore. Our water safety heroes cannot stop people from being stupid.
They look like the rescue was enjoyable; hey, let’s do it again!
