Boaters in distress keep rescue crews busy on Oahu, Kauai

The Coast Guard rescued seven people from an overturned canoe approximately two miles south of Kahala on Sunday. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu safely recovered all seven people onto the RB-M and transported them to the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.
Ten boaters ran into trouble in two separate incidents off Kahala Sunday.
In the first incident at 10:04 a.m., the Coast Guard and Ocean Safety lifeguards responded to a report of a 15-foot vessel taking on water with three people aboard a mile and a half south of Kahala. City lifeguards located all three boaters, took them aboard their jet skis and brought them to shore.
A 45-foot Coast Guard boat and its crew were unable to pump the water from the capsized vessel and it remains partially submerged, unlighted and adrift.
At 10:36 a.m. a canoe with seven people aboard overturned off Kahala, 100 yards from where the three people previously had to be rescued. The Coast Guard crew safely recovered all seven people and transported them to the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.
The Honolulu Fire Department righted the canoe and towed it toward Ala Wai Boat Harbor, before being relieved of the tow by a good Samaritan who brought the vessel safely into the harbor.
No injuries or pollution were reported from either case.
Early Sunday, the Coast Guard responded to a report of three boaters in distress off Kauai. A Coast Guard Station Kauai crew safely recovered them and brought them to Port Allen. One man was mildly hypothermic.

We love our Coast Guard. Great group. Note that this group of boaters thrown into the water stayed together and stayed with the vessel.That is a basic rule. Something that Eddie did not do. He might have made it if he had practiced good safety.
Keep you comments about Eddie to yourself. There’s a huge difference in circumstances with yesterday’s rescue and what happened with the Hokule’a. Eddie did what he though would give the crew the best chances of being rescued. On the other hand, the party rescued yesterday went out on only a 15 feet boat in not so ideal conditions for such a small boat.
Kudos to US Coast Guard! Every life saved is a plus no matter the circumstances how the accident occurred.
Where was the canoe’s escort boat? If you are a canoe paddler you find out how the water is and then you go with another group or have an escort boat to follow. I hope the Coast Guard charges these people. They all look so happy. What a waste of taxpayers money.
