Punahou grad Galdiano opens with 70 at LPGA Portland Classic

Mariel Galdiano, who will be a freshman at UCLA in the fall, was a three-time state champion at Punahou.

Punahou alumna Mariel Galdiano opened with a 2-under 70 at today’s LPGA Portland Classic in Portland, Ore.

Galdiano, who will be a freshman at UCLA in the fall, had two birdies and parred the rest of her holes today to tie for 14th place. The 18-year-old got into the field by winning Monday’s qualifier. Earlier this month, the three-time state high school champion played on the U.S. team at the Curtis Cup in Dublin.

Defending champion Brooke Henderson leads at 7-under 65. Demi Runas, Mariajo Uribe and Angela Stanford finished 5 under.

Stephanie Kono, who played at Punahou and UCLA, finished at 1-over 73. Kono had four birdies and five bogeys and is sitting at the projected cut line.

Kapolei graduate Sydney Maluenda opened with an 8-over 80. Maluenda, a three-time All-American at Division III George Fox, had two birdies, six bogeys and two double bogeys. Maluenda, who will be a senior at George Fox in the fall, got into the tournament on a sponsor’s exemption.
