Coast Guard rescues mariners helping in search for missing fishermen

The Coast Guard, Navy and Honolulu Fire Department are searching for three missing fishermen after their 20-foot fishing vessel, Iwa, was spotted overturned by the Coast Guard approximately 25 miles off Haleiwa Boat Harbor.
Mariners assisting in the search for three missing fishermen needed rescue themselves after their 30-foot recreational boat capsized while they attempted to tow an overturned fishing boat found adrift 25-miles off of Haleiwa Harbor.
Meanwhile, the search for the fishermen, missing since failing to return from a trip Sunday, continues.
The men towing the overturned boat called for help Monday night, saying their boat was sinking and that they were abandoning ship at 8:35 p.m. The call was abruptly cut off, the Coast Guard said in a news release.
The Honolulu Fire Department relayed the information to the Coast Guard, which also received a signal from an emergency position radio beacon.
A Coast Guard helicopter involved in the search for the missing men picked up the three men from the ocean and flew them to Haleiwa Boat Harbor. A fourth man was able to swim to shore.
Paramedics treated one of the four men for hypothermia. No other injuries were reported.
The search for the missing fishermen — Jensen Loo, Clint Oshima and Derek Tomas, all 30 years old — continued through the night, the Coast Guard reported.
A Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter, an HC-130 Hercules airplane and the USCGC Kiska are involved in the search.
Crews reported 15 to 25 mph winds, but good visibility in the search area.

Now they have two boats to tow in. Glad all four are ok. Thanks to the Coast Guard their always there when you need them.
Commendable effort by both civilians and Coast Guard. Sounds ugly there. Glad I’m laid up. May God protect the missing.
With all respect, sometimes it is better to leave things to the professionals. The rescue of the searchers diverted resources from the original search.
