Police arrest suspect in fatal hit-and-run in Aiea Heights

A small memorial with flowers sat next to a toppled sign Sunday in the 99-360 block of Aiea Heights Drive where a yard worker was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Saturday. Police arrested a 42-year-old man in connection with the accident.
Police arrested a 42-year-old man Sunday in connection with a hit-and-run accident in Aiea Saturday afternoon.
The suspect was arrested at 10:15 p.m. on suspicion of second-degree negligent homicide and failure to render aid.
He was still in custody this morning in the cell block at the main police station while police continued their investigation. No charges have been filed.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has withheld the name of the victim, pending notification of relatives. However, a friend identified the victim as Brandon Kishida, 42.
Police said the victim was doing yard work along Aiea Heights Drive at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a person driving a silver Honda CR-V near Hoio Street. The man was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.
The driver fled the scene.

They probably got the correct Honda with damages BUT the major problem is: Who was behind of the wheel of the CRV Honda?
If it is his car, let him prove that he wasn’t driving it. Else, it was him.
Except that’s not the way courts in the United States work. The burden of proof rests with the State and the level of proof in criminal court is beyond a reasonable doubt.
Yes. I do know that but in today’s criminology lab, if finger prints are only his on the steering wheel, that would be sufficient. Like the mom asking her son if he ate the cookies and he said no but there are cookie crumbs on his face. There are other evidence that can be had such as his alibi(s).

That’s not how it works, the burden of proof is on the State, they have to prove he was behind the wheel. Let’s all just wait and let HPD complete their investigation. The arrest is just a first step. You can expect that they may very well release the suspect pending the conclusion of their investigation and the filing of a formal charge by the prosecutor. Condolences to Mr. Kishida’s ohana.
There’s considerable truth in what kiragirl posted. Yes, the burden is on the State, but there is a presumption that comes into play here.
It’s a similar kind of situation as when a cop finds a someone in the driver’s seat, drunk and passed out at the wheel with his car at the side of the road, stopped but with the motor running. The guy can be charged and convicted of drunk driving even though the car was stopped and the transmission was in park. The burden would be on him to prove that someone else was driving but left the vehicle, and he just moved over into the driver’s seat but hadn’t actually been driving.
yup…that is the defense he is making. I am so sorry for the family of Mr. Kishida. God give them strength.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking. If my memory serves me correctly there was a case where they couldn’t charge the supposed driver who had either killed or injured someone with a serious crime because nobody could place him behind the wheel when the collision occurred. Forgot the specifics though. I just hope there isn’t the same problem this time. Would be such an injustice to the victim.

He could have been drunk or otherwise impaired, that’s usually why drivers flee the scene of an accident.
You forgot about auto insurance.
How do you knowingly hit someone with your car and just drive away? How do you sleep? I freak out if i hit a bird on the road.

There are so many shady things people can do at the time of an accident and flee because they dont want to be exposed. For example maybe he was drunk and didnt want a dui, or, maybe he is from Kaneohe and was cheating on his wife with someone in Aiea and after accidently hitting the man he didnt want his wife asking him what he was doing in Aiea at that time of the night…
I wonder why you would think of that? Maybe something someone you know would do?

He hit and killed Kishida Saturday afternoon. He was arrested Sunday at 10:15 p.m.
The fact that police had the vehicle make and description and license plate would suggest that there were a witness and or witnesses to this very sad accident which may mean
that they saw who was driving. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
But if the suspect, who is yet unidentified is found guilty, I do hope he receives a prison/jail sentence or whatever the maximum punishment allowed by law.
We are having too many of these kind of incidents, where the drivers flee the scene and even when caught and convicted, largely just get a slap on the wrist if that.
Under such circumstances, if you do run someone over, you are indeed better off leaving the scene because you have a very good chance of not being caught.
So why not chance um. This is the mentality of a lot of low life types that seem to be everywhere these days.
If he is the perp then put him away.

Wow, read KHON2 and Hawaii News Now sites and it said the driver been getting traffic tickets spanning almost 20 years. 5 speeding, 1 running red light, driving under influence of intoxicant. Now this. Braddah neva learn. Which judge going let him off the hook and let him get behind the wheel again?
And the victim was being a Good Samaritan by mow the grass of a senior citizen … that bites …
